Mendel er en ni år gammel jødisk flyktning som kommer til Norge på femtitallet. Han er himmelfallen over at det ikke vandrer isbjørner i gatene, over tran, fiskeboller og misjonsiver. 　　Flyktningene beklager seg over nordmenns særegenheter, men Mendel oppdager at det ikke er enkelt blant jøder heller. 　　For Mendels familie er krigen fortsatt nær, men de vil ikke fortelle barna om den. Mendel lurer på hvorfor faren ikke gjorde noe under krigen, og for å bevare stoltheten må Mendel utkjempe sin egen krig.

At a used car lot, Mr. Magoo is intent on buying a car for his nephew Waldo. He is slick talked into buying an old clunker thanks to a shifty salesman but he drives it off anyway. Unfortunately, the myopic Magoo drives off a pier and under the ocean where he mistakes the various aquatic surroundings such as fish, sunken boats, and seals for other cars, dilapidated mansions, and a horn happy driver respectively.
